Backsack Bag Sewing Pattern

This versatile bag, which can be worn as a backpack or used as a tote. Pull the strap to close the bag and you're ready to go.

Materials
5/8 yd. fabric (bag)
1/2 yd. lining fabric

Cut one piece of fabric 14" x 36" for bag. Cut two straps 21/2" x 33". Cut two pieces for bag lining 14" x 151/2".

Construction
All seam allowances are 1/4".

For straps, fold fabric lengthwise. Stitch, turn and press. Topstitch both sides close to edge. Stitch lining to bag ends.



On wrong side of bag, baste straps close to seam on either end of bag.



Stitch side seams. Match seamlines, and stitch to 1/4" below straps. Leave 11/2" opening unstitched below strap. Continue stitching to end.



Turn lining to inside, and pull straps out. Fold down 11/2" of bag to inside for facing. Press.

Stitch around bag on seam line. Stitch around bag just below fold to form casing.

Pull straps through casing in the direction which will hide the seam.



Attach loose ends of straps to stitched corners of bag by folding straps into corners, forming base of bag. Stitch from the wrong side.



Pull lining out, press under seam allowance. Stitch. Turn in the raw edges of 11/2" opening and stitch closed by hand.


Strap is stitched to form bag corner.
