1963 Afghan Stitch Scarf Crochet Pattern

Materials List:
Fingering yarn, 3 ply, (5) 1-oz. skeins
Afghan hook size 4 or F
Steel crochet hook No. 1

SIZE: 11" x 40", excluding fringe.

GAUGE: 11 sts = 2"

PATTERN:
Row 1: First Half of Row: Work with afghan hook. Keeping all lps on hook, sk first sc, pull up a lp in 2nd sc and in each remaining sc across -- 60 lps on hook. 2nd Half of Row: Yo hook, pull through first lp, * yo hook, pull through next 2 lps, repeat from * across until 1 lp remains. Ch 1; do not turn.

Row 2: Pull up a lp under first vertical bar (formed by lp of previous row), yo and draw through both lps on hook (sc in vertical bar made); sc in each vertical bar across to last vertical bar, insert hook through last vertical bar and lp directly behind it and complete a sc (this edge st makes a firm edge). Ch 1, turn. Repeat rows 1 and 2 for pat.

SCARF:
Beg at narrow edge, ch 61 (11 sts to 2"). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-60 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work in pat until piece measures 40", end row 2. Break off yarn and fasten.

FINISHING:
Steam-press to measurements. From right side, with crochet hook, work 1 row sc evenly around entire outer edge, making 3 sc in each corner. Be careful to keep work flat. Join with sl st to first sc; turn. Sl st in each sc around; join. End off.

FRINGE:
Cut 4 strands of yarn each 7" long. Double these strands to form a loop. With right side facing, insert crochet hook in corner st on narrow edge and draw loop through. Draw loose ends through loop and pull up tightly to form a knot. Make fringes evenly spaced across each narrow edge.
