Materials:Caron Wintuk*, 100% Acrilan acrylic with Bounce-Back® Fibers, worsted weight yarn, 100-gr./213-yd. skein: 7 skeins Ecru #3002 (MC); 3 skeins each Carmel Topping #3049 (A) and Sage #3149 (E); 2 skeins each Light Yellow #3013 (B), Spring Meadows #3046 (C), and GoldenWheat #3054 (D)
Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 (4.25 and 5 mm), or size to obtain gauge
Set of 4 size 6 (4.25 mm) dp needles
Tapestry needle

GAUGE: In St st with larger needles, 18 sts and 25 rows = 4"
To make sure afghan is desired size, take time to check gauge.

ABREVIATIONS:
Bobble (MB): (K in front and back of next st) twice, turn; k 4, turn; p 4, pass each st over last to complete bobble. Ssk: Sl next 2 sts one at a time to right-hand needle as if to k, insert left-hand needle in front of those 2 sts, k2 tog.

PATTERN STITCHES
Tube St (worked on 5 sts; a rep of 2 rows):
Row 1 (Right Side): K 1, (sl 1 as if to p, k1) twice.
Row 2: (Sl 1 as if to p, p 1) twice, sl 1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for Tube St.
I-Cord (worked on 3 sts; a rep of 1 row): Row 1: * K3, do not turn work, slide sts back to right end of needle and rep from *.

AFGHAN
Plain Panel (make three)
With MC and largest needles, CO 51 sts. Work in St st for 55". BO all sts.
Trellis Panel (make two)
With C and larger needles, CO 27 sts.
Preparation Row (Wrong Side): With MC, p2; * p1 wrapping yarn around needle twice, p5, p1 wrapping twice, p1; rep from * across, p1.
Row 1: With C, k2; * sl 1 wyib dropping extra wrap, k5, sl 1 wyib dropping extra wrap, k1; rep from * across, k1.
Row 2: With C, p2; * sl 1 wyif, p5, sl 1 wyif, p1; rep from * across, p1.
Row 3: With C, k2; * sl 1 wyib, k5, sl 1 wyib, k1; rep from * across, k1.
Row 4: With C, purl across, dropping all elongated MC sts off needle to back (right side of fabric).

With A and larger needles, CO 247 sts.

Work as for Center on 71 sts.
Large Stem
With C and smaller needles, CO 5 sts and work Tube St.
Make three 18" long and three 20" long.
Small Stem
With C and dp needles, CO 3 sts and work I-Cord. Make three 8" long and three 6" long.
Leaf (make 27)
With E and larger needles, CO 7 sts. Row 1 (Right Side):
K3, yo, k1, yo, k3—9 sts.
Rows 2 and 4: Purl.
Row 3: K4, yo, k1, yo, k4—11 sts.
Row 5: BO 3 sts, k1, yo, k1, yo, k5—10 sts.
Row 6: BO 3 sts, p6—7 sts.

Large Petal (make 72) With D and larger needles, CO 5 sts and work Rows 1–10 of Small Petal, k1 row, p1 row, then work Rows 1–18 of Small Petal.

FINISHING
Steam pieces lightly.
Split yarn for sewing.
Sunflower Panels: Following placement diagram, stitch each components as follows: Centers: Coil onto itself while sewing in place, creating a 6"-diameter circle.
Half Center: Starting at edge of panel, sew a row of 4 bobbles in place, turn and sew next row of 6 bobbles on place, turn and sew rem bobbles for last row.
Petals: For Centers, sew one row of Large Petals evenly around, slightly tucked under, then sew a top row of Small Petals staggered over first row. For Half Centers, sew a row of 3 Large Petals first, then a top row of 4 Small Petals.
Stems: Sew longest Large Stem from lower edge to 2nd flower, and shortest Large Stem from 2nd flower to top flower. Sew longest I-cord from lowest stem to first flower and shortest I-cord from highest stem to 3rd flower.
Alternate Plain Panels with Trellis Panels across and stitch tog.
Top and Bottom Edging: With MC and larger needles, pick up and k 203 sts evenly on RS. Row 1 (Wrong Side): P1; * k3, p3; rep from * across, end last rep p1. Row 2: K1; * p3, k3; rep from * across, end last rep k1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2, while at the same time, inc 1 st each end every other row 4 times, working in est pat on new sts—211 sts. BO all sts.
Side Edging: Work as for Top and Bottom Edging, picking up 287 sts to start—295 sts to BO.
Sew short edges of Edgings at corners.
