Ducks in a Row Square Pattern


This picture shows what one "duck" will look like when you assembly the smaller squares.



This picture shows how the ducks are placed to make the entire afghan. Note: To make the second row of ducks, you need to reverse the placement of the small squares so that the duck faces the opposite direction.


Ducks in a Row Pattern

Materials List
Size I hook
tapestry needle
4 ply worsted weight yarn: light yellow (body), light blue (water), gold (beak) and small amount of black (eye)

NOTE: You can also use bright yellow or white for the duck body and any shade of blue for the water.

SIZE: Approximately 11 1/2" square

DIRECTIONS:

SQUARE #1: Blue/yellow (Make 5)
With blue, ch 2.

Row 1: Make 3 sc in second ch from hook, ch 2, turn. (3 sc)

Row 2: Sc in second ch from hook, sc in next 3 sc, sc in top of turning ch, ch 2, turn. (5 sc)

Row 3-9: Repeat pattern established in Row 2 until there are 19 sc at the end of Row 9, end off.

Row 10: Join yellow in same st, ch 1, turn. Dec in next 2 sc, sc across row until last 2 sc, dec last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (17 sc)

Row 11: Dec first 2 sc, sc across row until last 2 sc, dec last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. (15 sc)

Row 12-17: Repeat Row 11. At the end of Row 17 there will be 3 sc.

Row 18: Work all 3 sc together, end off.

SQUARE #2: Blue/gold (Make 1)
Follow directions of Square #1 using gold yarn instead of yellow.

SQUARE #3: One-color square (Make 1 blue and 2 yellow)
Follow directions of Square #1 except don't end off after Row 9 but instead continue entire square with only one color yarn.

FINISHING: Arrange squares according to picture. Slip st squares together LOOSELY. Using black yarn and tapestry needle, cross stitch an eye for the duck.
