Pearl cotton, size 5, 10 balls of ecru and 2 balls of black
steel crochet hook No. 1.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1"; 7 rows make 1".

Use two strands throughout.

Starting at center of crown with ecru, ch 2.

1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.

2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around.

3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around (18 sc).

4th rnd: * Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around.

Continue in this manner, increasing 1 sc in every 2nd sc of each 2-sc group until 18 rnds in all have been completed. There are 108 sc on last rnd.

Work without increasing until piece measures 5" from center top.

Break off ecru.

Attach 2 strands of black and work 6 more rnds. Break off black.

LOWER PART OF BRIM: Attach ecru and sc in each sc around, increasing evenly around as necessary to keep work flat, until brim measures 2" deep.

UPPER PART OF BRIM: Sc in each sc around, decreasing as necessary to keep work flat-to dec an sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Break off.

Turn the last half of brim over so that right sides of brim meet, and sew the loose edge in place.
