Work over 42 (48,54,60,66,72) sts until piece measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2, 6, 6 1/2, 7)
Chain 12 (14, 16, 18, 20), skip 12 (14, 16, 18, 20) sts, continue working around until piece measures 8 (9,10,11,12) more inches.

Hat can be decorated with cross stitch or by changing colors in the rows. Use your favorite pattern as long as the pattern sequence divides equally into the number of stitches around.

Here is the pattern stitch I used in the example (size Adult Small)
