Crocheted Cap Beret Pattern

Note: This beret may be made with or without a brim

Materials: one skein of 4 ply yarn (worsted weight), crochet hook size G, sheet of plastic canvas for brim stiffener

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yarn over, insert hook from front to back and out to the front again around the post of the dc of the row below, hook yarn and pull up a 1oop (3 loops on hook), (yarn over and draw through 2 loops) two times. fpdc completed.

HAT
chain 5, ss in the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, 11 dc in ring. End with a ss to top of ch 3: 12 dc made.

Round 2: Ch 3, work fpdc around post of ch 3 of rnd below, *dc in and work fpdc around next dc (increase made). Repeat from * around, end ss to top of ch 3: 24 sts, 12 dc and 12 fpdc

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in and work fpdc around post of next dc, * [dc in next dc], dc in and work fpdc around post of next dc. Repeat from * around, end ss to top of ch 3: 36 sts.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, dc in and work fpdc around post of next dc, *dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in and work fpdc around post of next dc. Repeat from * around, end ss to top of ch 3: 48 sts.

Round 5-10: Repeat rnd 3, increasing one stitch between fpdc each row (see [] of round 3 until there are 9 sts between each post. To make cap larger add more rounds from here.

Round 11: ss into next dc. Ch 3. Skip next dc, dc in next 7 dc, fpdc around next dc. *Skip next dc, dc in next 8 dc, fpdc around next dc*. Repeat between *’s around. Join with a ss to the top of ch 3: 8 sts between fpdc posts.

Round 12: Repeat Round 11: 7 sts between each post

Round l3: Repeat Round 11: 6 sts between each post.

Round 14: Do not decrease. Ch 3, dc in next 5 dc. Work fpdc around next dc. *dc in next 6 dc, work fpdc around next dc*. Repeat between *'s around. Join with a ss to top of ch 3.

Round 15: ss in next dc, ch3, dc in next 4 dc. Work fpdc around the next dc, *skip next dc, dc in next 5 dc, work fpdc around next dc*. Repeat between *'s around. Join with a ss in the top of ch 3.

Round 16: Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, work fpdc around the next dc, * dc in next 5 dc, work fpdc around next dc*. Repeat between *'s around. Join with a ss in the top of ch 3.

Rounds 17 and 18: Sc around. For brimless hat fasten off. For brim cap Do NOT FASTEN Off.

BRIM

Row 1: Sc in next 38 sts, ch 1, turn

Rows 2-12: Repeat Row 1

Row 13: Ch 1 and turn. Decrease 7 times evenly : 31 sts

Row 14: Ch 1 and turn. Decrease 6 times evenly : 25 sts

Row 15: Ch 1 and turn. Decrease 5 times evenly : 20 sts

Row 16: Ch 1 and turn. Decrease 4 times evenly : 16 sts

Row 17 and 18: sc across. Finish off

Using the template, cut out plastic brim form, insert and sew together(the brim decreases make a little flap to hold it). Some small changes in the size of the insert will probably be required depending on gauge. Add a pom pom to finish off, if desired.
