BERET

Materials: 4 ounces knitting worsted, hook size F
Gauge: 7HDC = 2 inches

Crown: ch4, join in ring with sl st
Round 1: 8 hdc in ring, attach marker; move it up with each new round
Round 2: 2 hdc in eact st
Round 3: *1 hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st* (total of 24 hdc)
Round 4: *1 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 hdc in next st* (total of 32 hdc)
Round 5: Increase 8 hdc, placing the increases every 4th st. (40 hdc)
Round 6 and 7: Increase 10 hdc in each round (60 hdc at end of Round 7)
Rounds 8,9,10,11,12: Increase 6 hdc in each round (total of 110 hdc at end of Round 12)
Rounds 13,14,15: work evenly
Rounds 16,17,18,19: Decrease 10 sts in each round (70 hdc at end of 19)
Band: Work evenly in sc for 6 rounds; join last round with sl st to 1st
sc; fasten off. Weave yarn end under edge on inside of hat for 1 inch.

HAT WITH BRIM


Of two-tone yard for a tweed effect: fits heads 21-23 inches.
Materials: 4 ounces knitting worsted, hook size F
Gauge: 9 sc = 2 inches

Crown: ch 3, join in ring with sl st
Round 1: ch 1, 9 sc in ring, mark end of round with yarn or coil ring; continue to move marker with each new round
Round 2: 2 sc in each st of Round 1 (total of 18 sc)
Round 3: *1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc* (total of 27 sc)
Round 4: *1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc* (total of 36 sc)
Round 5: *1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc* (total of 45 sc)
Round 6: 1 sc in each st (no increase) Work 7 more rounds, increasing 9 sc on every other round. You will have 81 sc at end of Round 13. Increase 9 sc in both Rounds 14 and 15 (total of 99 sc); continue to work evenly until hat measures 7 inches from center of crown. Brim: for the first round, increase in every 4th st (total of 124 sc); work evenly until brim measures 2 inches. Working from left to right on the right side, make 1 sc in each st, sl st to 1st sc, fasten off.
Weave yarn end under the edge on the right side for about 1 inch.

CHILD'S CAP


For ages 4 to 8
Materials: 4 ounces wool sport yarn, hook size F
Gauge: 9 sc = 2 inches

Crown: work 13 rounds, following the instructions for hat with brim.
Work evenly on 81 sc until hat measures 6 1/2 inches from center of crown, sl st to 1st sc in final round to close
Cuff: work in rows on the wrong side.
Row 1 (wrong side): 1 sc in sl st of last rnd, 1 sc in each of next 80 sc, ch 1, turn
Row 2: 1 sc in each sc, ch 1, turn
Row 3: 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 post dc around front of 3rd sc in Row 1 {yo, insert hook across front of 3rd sc in Row 1, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops, yo, draw through remaining 2 loops}, *sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 post dc around next sc in Row 1*, rep from * across row, ch 1, turn
Rows 4,5,6: *1 sc in each st*, ch 1, turn
Row 7: 1 sc in each of 1st 2 sc, 1 post tr in post st 3 rows below, *sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 post tr in post st 3 rows below*, ch 1, turn
Repeat Rows 4-7 once more, fasten off. Right side facing you, work 1 row of sl st along edge, then whipstitch back seams together from wrong side. Fasten off; weave end into seam. Turn cuff back.

Woman's Hat
Puff Stitch: 3 dc half closed and join tog in same loop or st. Shell: Puff st ch 4, Puff st in same loop.

Square Motif:
Ch 5, and sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 12 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: *Ch 11, sl st in next sc*, rep from *to*, 11 times. 12 loops.
Rnd 3: Sl st in first 6 ch sts of first loop, ch 1 *sc in loop, ch 4, sc in next loop, ch 4 shell in next loop, ch 4*, rep from * to * around.
Rnd 4: Sl st to first ch 4 loop *puff st in loop, ch 4, hdc in next loop, ch 4, shel in space of shell, ch 4, hdc in next loop., ch 4, rep from * to * around. Fasten off.

For hat make 5 Square motifs. Join 4 squares into a strip. Sew strip ends together. Put 5th square on top wrong side facing out and sew to top of hat. Turn Hat right side out. Brim: Using a double strand of yarn throughout.
Rnd 1: With right side facing, join yarn in any ch 4 sp at lower edge of hat, ch 1 work 3 sc in each ch 4 sp around.
Rnd 2: Ch 1 * sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc * rep from * to * around.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc around.
Rnd 4: Ch 1 * sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc* rep from * to * around.
Rnd 5: Rep rnd 3.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, *sc in each of next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc * rep from * to * around.
Rnd 7: Rep rnd 3.
Rnd 8: Ch 1, * sc in each of next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc *, rep from * to * around.
Rnd 9: Ch 1 * sc in sc, ch 2 skip 1 sc * rep from * to * around. Fasten off. Turn up center front of brim and sew into place.

Start with a little thread circle & crochet 8 sc into it: then pull the thread to close the circle tightly. Mark the first stitch, then work on continuous rounds.

rnd3: 2sc in ea sc around
rnd4:sc in ea sc around

Slip-Stitch Hat For Kids


MATERIALS: Worsted-wt yarn--4 ozs. orange, 1 oz. white; 2"square cardboard;
tapestry needle; G hook or hook needed to obtain gauge.

FINISHED SIZE: One size fits all.
GAUGE: 5 sl sts -- 1"; 7 sl st back lp rows = 1 ".
NOTE: Work in back lps unless otherwise stated

HAT
Row 1:
With orange, ch 50, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each ch across, turn (49 sl sts).
Rows 2-10: Ch 1, sl st in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.
Row 11: join white with sl st in first st, sl st in each st across, turn.
Row 12: Ch 1, sl st in each st across, turn. Fasten off.
Row 13: join orange with sl st in first st, sl st in each st across, turn.
Rows 14-120: Repeat rows 2-13 consecutively, ending with row 12.
Leaving 18" for sewing, fasten off.
Overlap edges of first and last rows to form rib, sew tog.
Weave separate strand orange through ends of rows on 1 side of Hat, pull tightly to gather, secure ends.

POM-POM
Wrap 1 strand each orange and white held tog around cardboard 50 times; slide loops off cardboard, tie separate 6" strand tightly around center of all loops; cut loops. Trim ends.
Sew to center top of Hat.

THICK AND WARM HAT


Materials

Crochet hook size J
Yarn needle

Note: Entire pattern is worked holding two strands of yarn together

Ch 31
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook, dc in next st; repeat sc, dc pattern to end, ending with dc; ch 1, turn - 30 sts
Row2: Sc in first st, dc in next ( pattern made ); repeat pattern to end, ending with dc; ch 1, turn
Row 3: Repeat pattern for next 28 sts ending with dc; ch 1, turn - 28 sts in row
Row 4: Repeat Row 2
Row 5: Repeat pattern for next 28 sts, drop down to Row 2, sc in next st, dc in last st; ch 1, turn - 30 sts in row
Repeat Row 2 - 5 until widest end is 21" inches or to fit. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Whipstich back seam together. Weaving yarn through top,shorter edge of hat and gather tightly.
Add a pom-pom or leave it as is. Fold up cuff.

Coonskin Cap


Materials: 4-ply yarn - 4 ozs. dk. brown, 1 oz. brown, small amounts white, gray, black; 2 brown 9-mm. animal eyes; tapestry needle; G hook or size needed to obtain guage.
Guage: 4 sc = 1"; 4sc rows = 1".
Finished size: Small, 21" head. Instructions for large, 23" head are in [ ].

Sew ears to rnd 7 on head with slight tuck on each side of ear.

Eye (make 2)::
Rnd 1: With black, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook (8).
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in each of next 3 sts, join with sl st in first sc (16).
Fasten off. With right sides tog, sew last st of rnd 2 on each piece tog.

Mask::
Rnd 1: With right side facing you, join gray with sc in 2nd hdc on either eye, sc in same st, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) 3 times, sc next st on first eye and next st on 2nd eye tog, (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 6 times, 2 sc in next st, sc next st on 2nd eye and next st of first eye tog, (2 sc in next st, sc in next st) 3 times, join with sl st in first sc (42). Fasten off.
Row 2: Now working in rows, join white with sc in 3rd st, sc in same st, (sc in each of next 3 sts, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts), sc next 2 sts tog; repeat between ( ), 2 sc in next st leaving last 22 sts unworked. Fasten off.
Sew mask to head slightly above center. Attach animal eyes to black eyes 1/2" apart.

Muzzle::
Rnd 1: With white, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: (2sc in next st, sc in next st) around (9).
Rnd 3: Sc in each st around.
Rnd 4: 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc (18). Fasten off. With black, embroider satin stitch nose on end of muzzle. Sew muzzle to edge of black on eye and rnd 3 on head. Stuff head, sew to cap with bottom of head 7 rnds from edge.

Tail::
Row 1: Join lt. brown with sc in 6th rnd from edge of cap on opposite side from head; sc in next 5 sts, turn (6).
Rows 2 -3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.
Rnd 4: Now working in rnds, sc in front lps of next 6 sts, turn, sc in back lps of same 6 sts on row 3 (12).
Rnds 5 - 14: Working these rnds in back lps, sc in each st around. Stuff.
Rnds15 - 16: (Sc next 2 sts tog) around (6, 3). At end of rnd 16, leaving 6" for sewing, fasten off. Sew opening closed.

Fringe Instructions::
Cut several 3" strands yarn. Fold 1 strand in half, insert in st, pull fold through, pull ends through fold and tighten.
Working in front lps of rnds 1 -19 [1 - 21] on cap, fringe lt. brouwn a random, fringe dk. brown in remaining sts.
Working in front lps of rnds 4 - 13 on tail, fringe rnd 4 with lt. brown, (fringe next 2 rnds with black, fringe next 2 rnds with lt. brown); repeat to tip of tail.
