Materials List
Bear Brand, Fleisher's or Botany Twin-Pak Knitting Worsted, 4 oz. paks
Beret = 1 pak
Scarf = 2 paks
"Boye" Hook, Size G (or size required to obtain gauge)
GAUGE:
8 meshes = 3"
4 rows or rounds = 1-1/2"
Scarf is approx. 6" wide by 90" long, including fringe.
BERET:
Ch 3, join with a sl st in first st to form a ring.
Round 1: Work 6 sc in ring. Do not turn, continue around. Mark for beg. of round.
Round 2: * Ch 1, work 2 hdc in next st; repeat from * 5 times; 12 hdc.
Round 3: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in first ch-1 space--1 mesh made, ch 1, work 2 hdc between next 2 hdc--an increase, * ch 1, 1 hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, 2 hdc between next 2 hdc; repeat from * 4 times more; 18 hdc.
Round 4: * Ch 1, 1 hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, 1 hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1, 2 hdc between next 2 hdc; repeat from * 5 times more; 24 hdc.
Round 5: @ * Ch 1, 1 hdc in next ch-1 space *; repeat between *'s twice more, ch 1, 2 hdc between next 2 hdc; repeat from @ 5 times more; 30 hdc, 6 groups of 2 hdc with 4 meshes between groups.
Continue in this way, increasing 6 hdc as before in each round for 5 rounds more, having 1 mesh more between groups of 2 hdc every round; 60 hdc--6 groups of 2 hdc with 9 meshes between groups. Piece should measure about 8-1/2 ins. in diameter from increase point to opposite point.
Round 11: Omitting ch 1, * work 1 hdc in space under next ch 1; repeat from * 8 times more, 1 hdc between next 2 hdc, @ 1 hdc under each of next 9 ch-1 spaces, 1 hdc between next 2 hdc; repeat from @ 4 times more; 60 hdc.
From now on omit ch 1 and work hdc between hdc of previous round. Work 6 rounds even.
First Decrease Round: * Work 8 hdc, decrease 1 st as follows: yo, draw up a loop after next hdc, keeping 3 loops on hook, draw up a loop after next hdc, yo and through all 4 loops on hook; repeat from * 5 times more; 54 hdc.
Work 1 round even.
2nd Decrease Round: * Work 7 hdc, decrease 1 st as before; repeat from * 5 times more; 48 hdc.
Work 1 round even, 1 sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
POMPON:
Wind yarn 250 times around a 4-in. cardboard. Tie at one end securely; cut other end. Trim ends slightly. Sew pompon to top of beret as illustrated.
SCARF:
Ch 31.
PATTERN:
Row 1: Right side: Work 1 hdc in 3rd st from hook--1 mesh made, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, work 1 hdc in next ch; repeat from * to end of ch; 15 meshes.
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, work 1 hdc in first ch-1 space--1 mesh made, * ch 1, 1 hdc in next ch-1 space; repeat from * across, end ch 1, 1 hdc in ch-2 space; 15 meshes.
Repeat row 2 until about 76 ins. form beg., end on wrong side. Fasten off. Block, stretching 4 ins. in length.
Fringe: Wind yarn around an 8-in. cardboard. Cut at one end. Knot a 4-strand fringe in every mesh at both ends, as illustrated. Trim evenly.
