Eight 11/16-inch (17 mm) buttons (3 yellow, 3 pink, 2 blue)
Large-eyed blunt needle and matching thread

SIZE 6 (9-12, 18) months
Finished Chest 21 (23, 24-1/2) inches
GAUGE 22 stitches + 30 rows = 4-inches (10 cm) in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on larger needles.
NOTE Because leg-to-crotch length and crotch-to-underarm length can vary from baby to baby, measure and adjust lengths as necessary.
RIGHT SIDE With smaller needles and MC, cast on 41 (45, 49) sts.
Ribbing Row 1 K 1, (p 1, k 1) across.
Ribbing Row 2 P 1, (k 1, p 1) across.
Repeat these 2 rows for Ribbing. Work 16 rows Ribbing. Change to larger needles.
Continue in St st in the following Stripe Sequence (6 rows A; 6 rows B; 6 rows C; 6 rows D; 6 rows MC) Repeat for Stripe Pattern. AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st at both ends of next and every other row 16 times - 73 (77, 81) sts. Work even until piece measures 10 (11, 12) inches from beg OR to desired length from ankle to crotch.
Shape Crotch Keeping in Stripe Pattern, bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of next row, then work even over remaining 59 (63, 67) sts until 1 1/2-inch from beg of Crotch shaping, ending with a WS row.
Shape Placket Bind off 3 sts at beg of next row, then work even over remaining 56 (60, 64) sts for 9 (10, 11) inches or to desired length to underarm from beg of Crotch shaping, ending with a WS row.
DIVIDE FOR FRONT AND BACK Work across first 26 (28, 30) sts - for Front, place remaining 30 (32, 34) sts on a st holder to be worked later for Back. Work even over Front sts for 3 1/2 (4, 4 1/2 ) inches, ending with a WS row.
Shape Neck Bind off 7 sts at beg of next row. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows. Work even over remaining 15 (17, 19) sts until Front measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2) inches from division. Bind off all sts.
RIGHT BACK Slip 30 (32, 34) sts from st holder onto needle and keeping in Stripe Pattern, work even until Back measures 4 1/2 (5, 5 1/2 ) inches from beg of division. Bind off all sts.
LEFT SIDE Work as for Right Side, reversing all shaping.
SLEEVES With smaller needles and MC, cast on 37 (39, 41) sts. Work Ribbing as above. Change to larger needles and work in Stripe Pattern as for body. AT SAME TIME, inc 1 st at both ends of next, then every other row 7 (9, 10) times total - 51 (57, 61) sts. Work even until Sleeve measures 7 1/2 (8, 9) inches from beg or to desired length. Bind off all sts.
FINISHING Note: Button Placket is on Left Front for Girls; Right Front for Boys. Buttonhole Placket is on Right Front for Girls, Left Front for Boys.
Button Placket With smaller needles and MC, pick up and k 83 (93, 103) sts along placket edge. Work 7 rows in Ribbing. Bind off all sts in Ribbing.
Buttonhole Placket Work same as Button Placket until 2 rows Ribbing are complete. Mark for 8 evenly spaced buttonholes. Next Row (Rib to marker, bind off 2 sts) 8 times, Rib to end. Continue as for Button Placket, casting on 2 sts over bound off sts on next row.
Sew shoulder seams. Sew leg seams. Sew Back Seam down and around to Front, ending at Placket Shaping. Sew Sleeve seams. Sew Sleeves into armholes.
Collar With smaller needles and MC, beg at second row of Right Front Placket, pick up and k 2 sts at inner edge of placket, k 1 st into placket/front seam, pick up and k 7 sts along bound off neck edge.
Pick up and k 12 sts along Right Front neck, pick up and k 15 sts from Right Back neck, 1 st into back seam, 15 sts from Left Back neck, 12 sts from Left Front neck, pick up and k 7 sts along bound off neck edge, k 1 into placket/front seam, pick up and k 2 sts from inner edge of placket - 75 sts.
Work 24 rows Ribbing. Bind off all sts in Ribbing. Overlap Buttonhole Placket over Button Placket and sew down across bound-off sts at bottom edge. Sew buttons on Button Placket to correspond to buttonholes as follows: yellow, pink, blue, yellow, pink, blue, yellow, pink.
