Cuddly crochet outfit made from cuddly soft microfiber yarn to create an adorable striped sweater for infants and toddlers. Directions are for newborn to 3 months; changes for sizes 6 to 9, and 12 to 18 months are in parentheses.

Materials AUNT LYDIA'S "Caress", Art. 157 (2 ounce balls): 4 (4-1/2, 5) Ounces No. 2154 Lt. Blue CA, 3 (3-1/2, 4) ounces No. 2101 White CB.
Crochet Hooks: 4mm [US G-6] and 3.75mm [US F-5].
Yarn needle; 6 (7, 7) 9/16" buttons; sewing needle and thread.

GAUGE: 4 shells = 5"
16 rows = 5" in pat with larger hook
Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Instructions

LEFT FRONT: With larger hook and CA, ch 20 (26, 32).

Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; turn - 19 (25, 31) sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, * skip next 2 sts; 5 dc in next st - shell made; skip next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across changing to CB in last sc; turn - 3 (4, 5) shells.

Row 3: With CB, ch 1; draw up a lp in first 2 sts, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook - sc2tog made; * sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc in next st **; draw up a lp in next st, skip next st, draw up a lp in next st, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook - dec made; rep from * to last 2 sts, end at **; sc2tog; turn.

Row 4: Rep Row 3 changing to CA in last st.

Row 5: With CA, ch 3, 2 dc in first st, * skip next 2 sts, sc in next st, skip next 2 sts **, shell in next st; rep from * to last st, end at **; 3 dc in last st; turn.

Rep Rows 2-5 until 8 (10 1/2, 12)" from beg, end Row 5.

Shape Neck: With CA, ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st; sc in next st, * skip next 2 sts, shell in next st, skip next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * across changing to CB in last sc; turn.Work Rows 3 and 4 over rem 2 (3, 4) shells.

Top Row: With CA, ch 3, skip first st, * hdc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * across; turn.

2nd and 3rd Sizes Only: Work (1, 2) rows of sc.

All Sizes: Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT: Work same as for left front, reversing neck shaping by working in pat across 2 (3, 4) shells, then sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in last 2 sts. Fasten off. Turn, skip first 6 sts, attach yarn in next st and work in pat across. Complete to correspond to left front.

BACK: With larger hook and CA, ch 44 (56, 68) sts. Work in pat same as left front over 7 (9, 11) shells until back measures same as front to shoulder, omitting neck shaping and working Top Row and sc row(s) for 2nd and 3rd sizes.

SLEEVES: With larger hook and CA, ch 26 (30, 34).
Row 1 (Right Side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * 2 sc in next ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across; turn - 37 (43, 49) sc.Work even in pat same as for left front over 6 (7, 8) shells until 5 (6 1/2, 7 1/2)" from beg, end Row 4. Work Top Row same as for left front; do not work extra sc row(s). Fasten off.

FINISHING- Neckband: Sew shoulder seams. With right side facing and smaller hook, attach CB at right front neck; ch 3, work 45 (47, 49) dc evenly around; turn - 46 (48, 50) sts.
Ribbing Row: Ch 2, skip first st, * dc around the post of the next st from the front, dc around the post of the next st from the back; rep from * to last st; hdc in top of ch; turn. Rep last row once more. Fasten off.

Sleeve Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach CB at lower edge of sleeve; ch 3, work 25 (29, 33) dc across; turn - 26 (30, 34) sts.Work 2 rows of ribbing same as for neck. Fasten off. Rep on rem sleeve.

Measure 3-3/4 (4-1/2, 5)" down from shoulder seams. Place center of sleeve tops at seams and sew in place between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Body Ribbing: With right side facing and smaller hook, attach CB at lower edge; ch 3, work 81 (105, 129) dc across; turn - 82 (106, 130) sts.
Work 2 rows of ribbing same as for neck. Fasten off.

Button Band (Left front for girls, Right front for boys): With right side facing and smaller hook, attach CB at center front and work 7 rows of sc evenly across. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band: Mark positions for 6 (7, 7) buttonholes on rem front, the first and last 1/2" from top and bottom edges and 4 (5, 5) more evenly spaced between. Work 3 rows of sc across rem front.

Buttonhole Row: Ch 1, [sc to marker, ch 2, skip 2 sc] 6 (7, 7) times, sc to end; turn.
Next Row: Ch 1, [sc to sp, 2 sc in sp] 6 (7, 7) times, sc to end; turn.Work 2 more rows even in sc. Fasten off. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.Weave in ends.
