Woven Squares Baby Afghan Pattern
MATERIALS:
Lion Brand Jamie baby yarn (100% Monsanto Acrylic):
2-l/4 ozs. each of Pastel Green, Aqua, Pastel Yellow and Pink;
10-1/2 ozs. White
Crochet hook size G (or size required to obtain gauge)
Yarn needle
Sewing pins
Cardboard: 6" x 6" piece (for fringe)
Instructions
SIZE:
Finished afghan is approximately 30" x 40", excluding fringe. Each motif is approximately 5" square.
Woven Square (Make 48)
Center Strips (Make 8 for each square; 2 each of Pink, Aqua, Pastel Yellow and Pastel Green)
ROUND 1: Ch 17 loosely, dc in 4th ch from hook and in ea rem st of ch, fasten off. Weave in yarn ends.
Assembling Center Strips:
Lay Pink and Pastel Green strips out alternately on a flat surface. Following photo, and using pins to secure the strips to each other, alternately weave the Pastel Yellow and Aqua strips through the Pink and Pastel Green strips to form a square. Be sure all ends are secured so the assembly will not come apart. Note: It is important that the strips are woven neatly and evenly to give the best possible finished appearance.
Border:
Attach White in any corner of the assembly. (Note: Rnd 1 is worked through a single thickness only with the following exception: the 3 sc at each of the 4 corners are worked through both the outer corner of the top strip and the one directly below it.)
ROUND 1: Ch 1, 3 sc in same st, 2 sc across end of same strip, 3 sc across end of each of next 2 strips, *3 sc in corner, 2 sc across end of next (bottom) strip, 3 sc across end of each of next 2 strips, 3 sc in corner*, rep bet * around, join. 51 st to center sc of next corner.
ROUND 2: (Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same st, dc in ea of next 12 sc, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sp, dc in ea of next 12 sc*, rep bet * around, join. 51 st to next ch-2 sp.
ROUND 3: (Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in ea of next 16 sc, *2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sp, dc in ea of next 16 sc*, rep bet * around, join. Fasten off.
JOINING MOTIFS:
With White yarn, loosely sl st motifs together on wrong side of work. Weave in all yarn ends.
EDGING:
Attach White in any corner sp.
ROUND 1: (Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp, dc in ea st across to next corner, * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sp, dc in ea st across to next corner*, rep bet * twice, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. 51 st to next ch-2 sp.
ROUND 2: Rep Rnd 1, ending with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
FRINGE:
(Note: Each grouping of knotted fringe is made up of 2 strands of white held together with one strand of color, alternating the four colors.)
Wrap yarn around cardboard, cut across one side. Repeat as necessary. Knot fringe in every other st around afghan. Trim ends.
