MATERIALS:
Columbia-Minerva Nantuk Sweater & Afghan Yarn (2 oz. pull skein)
Color A: 5 skeins
Color B, C & D: 4 skeins EACH
"Boye" crochet hook size G

SIZE: About 60 x 70 inches

GAUGE: 1 pattern to 4 inches
BE SURE YOUR STITCH GAUGE IS CORRECT. Do not hesitate to change needle size to achieve gauge indicated in the instructions.

With Color A-ch 450

Row 1: 1 dc in 5th ch from hook, (skip next 2 ch, in next ch work 1 dc-ch 1 & 1 dc for a small group) 3 times, skip 2 ch, in next ch work 1 dc, (ch 1 & 1 dc) 3 times for a top group, (skip 2 ch, 1 small group in next ch) 3 times, * * (skip 2 ch, yo and draw up a loop in next ch, yo and through 2 loops) 3 times, yo and through 4 loops on hook for a dec group, (skip 2 ch, 1 small group in next ch) 3 times, skip 2 ch, 1 top group in next ch, (skip 2 ch, 1 small group in next ch) 3 times, repeat from * * to last 4 ch, skip 2 ch, yo and draw up a loop in next ch, yo and through 2 loops, yo and draw up a loop in last ch, yo and through 2 loops, yo and through 3 loops, fasten off.

Row 2: Join Color B, turn. With 1 loop on hook, yo and draw up a loop in top of first st, yo and through 2 loops, yo, draw up a loop in ch-1 space of next group, yo and through 2 loops, yo and through 3 loops, work a small group in ch-1 space of each of next 2 groups, 1 small group in first space of the next top group, 1 top group in center space of same top group, 1 small group in last space of same top group, 1 small group in ch-1 space of each of next 2 groups, * yo, draw up a 1 loop in space of next group, yo and through 2 loops, skip next dec group, yo, draw up a loop in next space, yo and through 2 loops, yo and through 3 loops for a dec group, 1 small group in each of next 2 spaces, 1 small group in first space of top group, 1 top group in center space of same top group, 1 small group in last space of same top group, 1 small group in each of next 2 spaces, repeat from * to last space then holding back last loop of each dc, work 1 dc in last space and in last st, yo and through 3 loops, fasten off.

Repeat Row 2 for pat, working 1 row each of Colors C, D, A & B until there are 77 stripes in all. Fasten off, weave in ends.

ASTERISKS ( * ): Star symbols indicate that work following them is to be repeated. When instructions call for repeating a given number of times, it is understood that this is in addition to the original. Thus, repeat 5 times more means 6 times in all.

BRACKETS [ ]: Instructions within brackets are to be worked the number of times given after the bracket.

WORK EVEN: Work without increasing or decreasing.

BLOCKING: Using rustproof brass pins, pin each piece, wrong side up, to a padded surface in exactly the line you wish to retain. Use a damp cloth and press very lightly with a moderately hot iron - do not allow weight of iron to rest on garment. Do not remove blocked pieces until thoroughly dry. Remove pins and steam out pin marks.

ASSEMBLING: Sew pieces together with care that edges meet evenly, matching rows wherever possible. Press all seams on wrong side.

WASHING NANTUK YARNS:
Use most convenient method, turning garment inside out before washing.

Machine Washing: Set at moderate temperature and any convenient cycle using a suitable soap or detergent. We recommend use of a fabric softener in the final rinse. Do not use bleach. If machine washed, you must machine dry.

Machine Drying: Set at any convenient temperature and cycle.

Hand Washing: Use cold or moderately warm water with suitable soap or detergent. Rinse well and roll in towel to remove excess water.

Hand Drying: Lay garment flat and mold into shape. Be sure garment is thoroughly dry before wearing. Never hang or stretch a hand knit and do not dry in sun.
