Big Granny Square Crochet Afghan Pattern

MATERIALS:
Baby blanket: Caron's Simply Soft --- 8 skeins white (W)
1 skein each of the following yellow (Y), pink (P), lavendar (L), blue (B)
2 skeins ombre (O) if you plan to fringe the edges

NOTE: For a full size afghan worsted weight yarn -- 24 (3.5-oz) skeins base color
1 skein EACH of 7 or 8 contrasting colors.

HOOK: size F or 4.00mm

Size: About 40" square (crocheted like one huge granny square)

1st RND: Ch 3, work 2 dc in ring, *ch 2, 3 dc in ring* 3 times, ch 2 join with slst in ch 3. There are 4 groups of what appears to be dc's.

2nd RND: Slst in next 2 dc, to the center of the first groups. *work sc, ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 3* 4 times, ch 3; join with slst in 1st sc.

3rd RND: Slst in next sp, ch 3, work 2 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in same sp (1st corner made); *ch 1, shell of 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, work corner of 3 dc, ch 2 and 3 dc in next corner sp* 3 times; ch 1 shell in next ch-3 sp, ch 1; join.

*** NOTE: 4th RND (ch-3 lp rnd) is always worked in the various colors. 5th rnd (shell rnd) is always worked in the base color (W).

4th RND (ch-3 lp): Slst in next 2 dc, join new color w/slsp in next space, * work sc, ch 2, sc in corner sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 3. Repeat from * 3 times more (3 ch-3 lp on each side); join.

5th RND (shell): Slst in corner sp, work 1st corner as for 3rd RND in same sp, * (ch 1, shell in next ch-3 sp) 3 times; ch 1, work corner in next corner sp* Repeat from * twice more; complete rnd (3 shells on each side); join.

Repeat 4th RND (ch-3 lp) and 5th RND (shell) for pattern throughout, adding 2 more lps to each side on lp rnds and 2 more shells on each side on shell rnd. Work in following colors; 2 more rnds W - base color (ending with shell rnd, * 1 rnd each Y, W, P, W, L, W, B, W, O. Repeat alternating the colors until it is the size you desire. Break off.

Fringe: Make a fringe on all sides or just two opposite sides by cutting 6" strands of yarn (I used the ombre) and putting groups of 3 to 5 together, folding in half and securing with an over hand knot.
