Angel Bear Ornament

MATERIALS:
Yarn: sport weight (bear color), approximately 1/2 oz.
fingering yarn, small amount for gown and wings
black: small amount for eyes and nose
gold braid, small amount (for halo)
gold thread (for hanger)
Crochet hooks: sizes C and E

SIZE: About 7" tall

DIRECTIONS:

HEAD AND BODY:

Rnd 1: With E hook, ch2, 8sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rnds. (8sc).

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sc).

Rnd 3: (Sc in next st, 2sc in next st) around. (24 sts).

Rnds 4-8: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 9: (Sc in next st, sc next 2 sts together as one) around. (16 st)

Begin Stuffing.

Rnd 10: Sc 2 tog around (8sc).

Rnds 11-12: Sc around.

NOTE: Head is finished. I find it much easier to work the Muzzle, eyes, nose and ears at this point.

MUZZLE

Rnd 1: With E hook, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook (6 sc).

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12sc).

Rnd 3: Sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc. Leaving long tail, fasten off.

Stuff lightly. From bottom opening and leaving a long tail for securing, sew to head, covering rounds 7-10. Go back down and out bottom opening and tie end together and snip off ends.

NOSE:

(Again working from bottom opening), embroider several st in center of muzzle over rnd 1.

EYES:

Working from bottom opening, leaving tail for securing, work French Knot in stitch each side of top of Muzzle with 4 sts between eyes. Go back out the bottom and tie ends off and snip ends.

EARS:

Working on one side of head 5/8" back from eye, with E hook, leaving long tail, join with sc in st on rnd 5, work 4 more sc in same st, sl st in next st on rnd 6. Fasten off. Tack beginning of Ear to round 4 using long tail. Working on other side of head in opposite direction, work same as first ear.

CONTINUE BODY

Rnd 13: Repeat rnd 2. (16 sc).

Rnd 14: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 15: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next) around. (24 st).

Rnd 16-22: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 23: (Sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts together as one) around. (18 sts). Stuff body.

Rnd 24: (Sc in next st, sc next 2 sts tog as one) around. (12 sts).

Rnd 25: (Sc next 2 sts tog) around. Leaving long tail for sewing, fasten off. Sew opening closed.

ARM: (Make 2)

Rnd 1: With E hook, ch 2, 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Do not join rounds.

Rnd 2: (Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next) around. (9 sc).

Rnds 3-10: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 11: Sc in next sc, (sc next 2 sts tog as one) 4 times. Leaving a long tail for sewing, fasten off. DO NOT STUFF.

Flatten last rnd on Arm, and with long tail, sew to side body.

LEG: (Make 2)

Rnd 1: With E hook ch 2, 6 sc i 2nd ch from hook. DO NOT JOIN. (6 sc).

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc. (12 sc). Fasten off.

Rnd 3: Working in BACK LOOPS only, sc in each st around.

Rnd 4: Working in BOTH LOOPS, sc in next 3; for front of foot, (sc next 2 tog) 3 times; sc in next 3. (9 sc).

Rnds 5-11: Sc in each st around. Leaving long tail for sewing, fasten off. DO NOT STUFF.

With front of foot pointing forward, flatten last round of leg. With long tail, sew to bottom of body over rounds 23-25.

GOWN - YOKE

With fingering yarn and C hook, ch 21.

Row 1: (Right side): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. (20 sc).

NOTE: Loop a short piece of thread around any stitch to mark last row as RIGHT side.

Row 2: Ch 3 (Counts as first dc, now and throughout). Turn, dc in same st, 2 dc in each sc across. (40 dc). Turn.

GOWN - SKIRT

Row 1: Sc in next 5 dc, ch 4, skip next 10 dc (armhole), sc in next 8 dc, ch 4, skip next 10 dc (armhole), sc in last 6 dc. (20 sc).

To work BEGINNING SHELL, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same st or sp.

To work SHELL, (3 dc ch 2, 3 dc) in st or sp indicated.

Row 2: Ch 3, turn; working in both loops, work beginning shell, (skip next 2 sts, work shell in next st) across. (60 dc and 10 ch 2 sps.

NOTE: BEGIN WORKING IN ROUNDS.

Rnd 1: Turn; slip st in next 2 dc and in next ch 2 sp, ch 3, work beg shell, work shell in each shell (ch 2 sp) around; join with sl st to first dc. (10 shells).

Rnds 2-5: Do NOT turn; slip st in next 2 dc and in next ch 2 sp, ch 3, work beginning shell, work shell in each shell around. Join with sl st to first dc.

Shell with picot: (2 dc, ch 3, sc in first ch, 2 dc).

Rnd 6: Shell with picot around. Fasten off.

YOKE, RUFFLE AND TIES:

Row 1: Ch 25, right side facing, work in free loops on row 2, sl st in 1st dc, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (beg shell) * sk 2 dc, shell in next dc,* across. Turn.

Row 2: Sl st in next 2 dc, (shell in next ch 2 sp) across. Turn.

Row 3: Sl st in next 2 dc, (shell w/picot in next ch 2 sp) across. Ch 25. Fasten off.

NECK EDGING AND TIES:

Ch 25 with right side facing and working in free loops, sc across. Ch 25. Fasten off.

WINGS:

First side: Ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring.

Row 1 : ch 3, 12 dc in ring. (13 dc).

Row 2: (Rt. side) ch 3, turn. Work beg shell, (sk next 2 dc, work shell in next dc) across. (5 shells).

Row 3: Turn, skip first dc, sl st in next 2 dc and in next ch 2 sp, ch 3, work shell in each shell across.

Row 4: Repeat row 3, except work shell with picot.

Work other side of wings the same as first side - starting with row 1 in the same ch 10 ring.

FINISHING:

Soak wings in Stiffin Stuff, wring, and lay flat to dry.

Use gold rick rack or other gold braid - make circle to fit head for halo. Sew to head. Make hanger with gold thread. Attach wings by pulling Gown ties through wings and tie in bow.

NOTE: Angel Bear Ornament can be treetop angel by cutting bottom off small styrofoam cup. Put bear in. It will free stand or put on top of small tree.
